I love urban fantasy, but I’m tired of hot young witches/vampires/werewolves. The Rivers of London series doesn’t do any of that. It was one of the first, after Dresden, to have a mage gumshoe solving supernatural crimes. But these books are very different from Dresden.
The books are funny, the main characters are a blast. Peter Grant is of West African descent, born and raised in London, with family that’s an absolute riot. He’s married a river goddess, and become entangled in her entire family of dampish deities. Peter works for the Folly, the London police branch that deals with the ‘weird bollocks’ crimes.
In Amongst Our Weapons, we have a string of murders where the victims have perfect holes bored through their chests. It seems those being murdered were all associated when they were young. Each has one of a set of magic rings that they’ve kept on their persons, unwittingly, for decades. But now an angelic, vengeful entity has come for them, because they have the rings.
Satisfying, a great police procedural, with brilliant characters and good, fun feels.
